Defend Our Homes League Protest in Portlaoise Thursday 14th June

No repossessions – No Evictions – bail out Home Owners

by Joan Collins TD

The estate agents Sherry Fitzgerald are acting for Ulster Bank in
attempting to sell the family home of Lee Welstead in Mountrath. The
house and land is up for sale for €90,000. You will remember that
this was where we stopped the County Registrar’s first attempt to evict
Lee but they later got access to the property with the help of Gardai.
We have been unable to get any answer as to the legality of this
action, even from a Dail question to the minister for Justice. The
wall of silence is a good indication that they are not on strong
ground.

DOHL in conjunction with Lee and local people are holding a protest at
the office of Sherry Fitzgerald in Portlaosie tomorrow (Thursday) to
let would-be buyers know this is a repossessed family home. We are
meeting in the Tesco car park in the town centre at 11.30am. The
protest will last for an hour or so. If you wish to come and need
transport please contact Dermot at 087 7675691.

DOHL has been extremely busy over the past period. We have got an
agreement with Allsops that they will not sell family homes
repossessed through the courts and will go through each auction to
satisfy us on this issue. This was a small but important victory
after we put protests on their earlier auctions.

Ben Gilroy and his group have been extremely busy in the courts and in
dealing with receivers in a number of cases. There is a very good
video on freedomfromall debt.ie which you should look at if you have
not done so already. Dermot from my office has also been very busy
dealing with the banks in relation to people with arrears. In fact
both Ben and Dermot are over stretched at the minute and it is
something we have to look at in DOHL.

These are the reasons we have not been able to organise a meeting in
the past period, but a Steering Group meeting is now being called for Tuesday July
3rd at 7.00pm in the Dail and I hope to see members of the Steering Group there.
Also Dermot is still working on the Bill to be presented to the Dáil on mortgage debt
and should have it ready soon.

Hopefully I will see you tomorrow in Portlaoise,
